And then you realize it’s August, and you never had a technician come out to give your air conditioner its annual checkup.

What will happen now? Is it really so bad to skip a year of AC maintenance? What are the risks? Most importantly, what can you do about it at this point? We’ve got answers for you.

Your Air Conditioner Without Maintenance

A major part of AC maintenance is checking over every single component of the system. This allows your technician to notice right away when something tiny has started to go wrong. When these concerns are corrected immediately, that means bigger problems won’t develop. So some of what will occur without AC maintenance is a complete surprise.

If that tiny concern was a worn area on a coil, you might end up with a refrigerant leak. If it was worn motor bearings, you could burn out the whole motor. If something like a screw or a fan blade was starting to come undone, it might fly loose, slamming into other components and causing all kinds of mayhem.

Other results of a lack of AC maintenance are more predictable. For one thing, it just won’t work as efficiently, meaning that your electric bill will start to creep upward. Dust clogging up the airflow, grit between moving parts, and a lack of lubrication will all contribute to the system having to work harder and thus consume more energy.

It will also be less effective. You could end up with a system that only runs in short cycles, never fully circulating the cooled air throughout your home. Overheating components (from all that dust, and the lack of lubrication causing friction) can make it so the air getting to your vents isn’t as cool, or the system is forced to shut down frequently to allow the components to cool down.

And sadly, it simply won’t live as long. All this unnecessary hard work, and all these unrepaired minor issues, will add up to a compressor that has to work harder more of the time. That’s the part you really can’t afford to damage because the end of the compressor almost always means the end of the entire air conditioner. You don’t want to have to buy a whole new system! Maintenance is much simpler and more affordable.

Schedule AC Maintenance Now

It’s absolutely reasonable to schedule your maintenance later in the season this year. Don’t wait until next spring! Problems that are minor now could be quite serious by then, leading to expensive repairs or even AC replacement. Having that maintenance done right away means spending the rest of the summer in better comfort, with lower electric bills, and not worrying about damage to your air conditioner.

When you have an AC tune-up in Joliet, IL, your technician will clean the whole system. They’ll add lubricant to moving parts to keep everything gliding easily. They’ll check every single part to be sure everything’s perfectly in order. And they’ll test the electrical components, making sure nothing is miscalibrated or drawing too much power. It’s quick and straightforward, and it’s absolutely worth it.

Call J&A today, Sleep-tight tonight!

Is it really so bad to skip a year of AC maintenance?
