Introducing the Geothermal Heat Pump
The basic geothermal system for home comfort is a type of heat pump, sometimes referred to as a ground–source heat pump to differentiate it from the standard air–source heat pump. An air–source heat pump carries out its heat exchange through the air outside a home: the exterior coil either draws heat from the air or releases heat to the air.
With a ground–source heat pump, the earth approximately 10 feet or deeper beneath the frost line is the medium for heat exchange. A water and antifreeze mixture moves through buried loops, where it either draws heat from the earth or deposits heat there. The antifreeze then enters a heat exchanger and transfers its energy to the standard refrigerant used in the indoor part of the heat pump.
How Does a Geothermal System Improve on an Air–Source Heat Pump?
Using the thermal energy from the ground rather than the air is an advantage for a heat pump because it’s accessing a stable temperature. At the depth the loops are buried, the temperature of the earth remains around 55°F, no matter how cold or hot the weather above the ground is. This makes the heat pump’s job easier, increasing its energy efficiency 5 or 6 times above that of an air–source heat pump. Even though a geothermal installation is more expensive than an air–source heat pump, the new system will soon pay back its costs.
Since geothermal systems have incredibly long lifespans (the underground loops can last more than 50 years), you will have plenty of time to enjoy the immense energy savings from the system. Plus, no worries about the heat pump losing efficiency during the coldest days of the year!
